May 27, 2023 - Columbus North’s recipe for success has been effective all season long. Great pitching, timely hitting, and taking advantage of opponents’ errors have been the staples of a successful season. On Friday evening, the Bull Dogs were victims of their own plan against Shelbyville in the softball Sectional finals. The Golden Bears ended the Bull Dogs’ season for the second consecutive year, handing North a 5-2 loss. Three Bull Dog defensive errors, combined with only five hits for the game doomed Columbus North, while the Bears were able to pound ten hits, including four doubles and a triple. Kaylee Cowan was able to smack a solo home run for North, but they could just not sustain enough scoring opportunities to overcome the Bears’ offense. Maddi Rutan again threw all seven innings allowing five earned runs on five hits while striking out four. Miley McClellan had two of the Dogs’ five hits, while Rutan had a double to go along with Cowan’s home run. The Bull Dogs reached some significant milestones this season, reaching the number one ranking in Indiana for the first time in program history and being recognized on a national level as well while accumulating 25 victories for the season.
